Books

Tim Ash is an online marketing pioneer who has been shaping and defining the discipline since 1995. He is a well-respected digital marketing thought leader who writes, conducts interviews, and speaks on topics such as, conversion rate optimization, neuromarketing, behavioral economics, and online business acceleration.

Unleashing The Primal Brain: The Essential Field Guide For Modern Marketers

By Tim Ash (2019 expected publication date)

Check out Tim Ash’s latest book (available for pre-order soon)! This ambitious yet accessible work is unlike the typical grab-bag books about various behavioral economics tactics used to manipulate people. Unleashing The Primal Brain goes back to the fundamental “why’s” behind our actions from an evolutionary perspective. From the rise of the earliest life on earth, to our uniquely human recent adaptations, you will come away with a deep understanding of our motivations, as well as practical ways to ethically use them for marketing purposes. It’s not about the technology – it’s about the biology!

Author’s Foreword: Why I wrote this book – and why you should read it!

Its dessert time!

There is a juicy apple in front of you, and a slice of chocolate cake.

You are free to choose.

Or are you?

The choice was made for you – hundreds of millions of years ago!

It was molded by ruthless survival pressures from the earliest days of life on earth. Adaptations that worked long ago are still inside of us – also shared with insects and reptiles. Later additions are common to all mammals from the tiniest shrews to massive whales. Other capabilities were bolted on relatively recently, and are only shared with our primate cousins. And the run-away explosion of humans on the planet can only be explained by our own recent and bizarre species-level evolution.

The only way to understand how we decide and act is to understand this complete evolutionary arc, and the layers of powerful unconscious machinery that really underpin decision making.

Drop a rock. It falls and hits the ground.

Once you understand brain evolution, many of our decisions will become trivial to predict. To a scary degree, we are walking automatons with mechanistic knee-jerk responses, and not the rational geniuses with free will that we like to imagine.

What I am about to teach you is incredibly powerful, but can easily be manipulated for evil purposes. Many people in the past have used the same insights and techniques to spread propaganda, enslave people, and even motivate war and destruction on an unimaginable scale.

I trust that you will use what I reveal only for good.  I challenge you to to join me and your fellow marketers as we deepen the understanding of human decision making, and apply it ethically to influence others.

It is only natural that in these days of “big data” and the strong bias towards rationality, marketers would try to apply the same tools and mindsets to their own profession. In an attempt to make marketing respectable, many have tried to make it akin to the hard sciences. Marketers have access to unprecedented amounts of information from campaigns and activities both in the physical world and online. But in their rush to make marketing more “scientific”, they have also assumed that human beings act in predictable and rational ways.

First the bad news – the notion that people make decisions and choices to maximize some notion of objective self-interest has been demolished. People are not rational – far from it.

Now the good news – we are finding out exactly how and why we act in these seemingly irrational ways. In other words, there is a method to our seeming madness.

My view of the brain is heavily influenced by evolutionary biology and psychology. I do not believe that we have arrived at a perfect brain design, or that humankind deserves an exalted and special place in the universe. Rather, we are a band of super-cooperative apes that have come to dominate the planet, and in the process wiped out whole ecosystems in our locust-like voracious destructiveness. We are by far the most dominant force shaping the very destiny of life on the planet.

We evolved very slowly for a particular environment, but our rapid social and cultural advances and mushrooming populations have created a bewildering new world in which our old brains need to function. On the timescale of this dizzying change, evolution has effectively stopped, and we must rely on what has gotten us this far. By retracing the path that our distant ancestors took to get here, we can understand the many stunning abilities and glaring weaknesses that we have inherited.

Sometimes our reactions and responses are appropriate and uncannily helpful. In the blink of an eye, we can assess complex situations, and reach critical life-or-death decisions. At other times, we are seemingly our own worst enemies – repeating the same mistakes even when we know that the results will be massively counterproductive, or even deadly.

Unlocking the true nature of the brain is the last frontier. Recent work in fields such as biology, neuroscience, evolutionary psychology, medical imaging, and behavioral economics are combining to show us the inner workings of this evolutionary marvel.

This book is designed for you – the busy marketing professional. I want to give you the essentials and draw you a map of this unexpected and wondrous terrain inside of the human mind. You will forever be altered by this journey that we are about to undertake together. It will seem like alien landscapes at first. But you will gain valuable perspectives that will allow you to do your job (and hopefully even live your life) with a new appreciation of how we got here and what makes us tick.

Forget the technology – let’s explore inside of the bony skull guarding the treasures within…

Get ready, it’s going to be a wild ride!
