Boom – technology is accelerating everything!
And the acceleration is itself accelerating – acting less like something predictable, and more like a rampaging tornado transforming and violently reordering every aspect of existence on this planet. While daily life was essentially unchanged for many people over the course of their lifetimes and even ensuing millennia, the same cannot be said of our age.
Feel the cadence of this buildup in your own body: fire, the wheel, printing presses, steam power, electricity, computers, and the rise of a worldwide network to instantly connect every person and sensor on the planet – future shock is happening, and the next moment is already so yesterday…
Hurtling towards some adaptive, self-aware, and fully-autonomous global intelligence known as “the singularity” we are largely powerless to affect the course of our lives. Quite unintentionally, these may be the very last days of regular humans. If we continue as a species at all, we will most like be genetically engineered, and augmented to plug directly into this vast pulsing matrix. Ethical dilemmas around the very definition of what it means to be human will shake many of our deeply cherished foundations. That is, if the machines decide to keep us around at all…
It is only natural that in these days of “big data” and the strong bias towards rationality, marketers would try to apply the same tools and mindsets to their own profession. In an attempt to make marketing respectable, many have tried to make it akin to the hard sciences. Marketers have access to unprecedented amounts of information from campaigns and activities both in the physical world and online. But in their rush to make marketing more “scientific”, they have also assumed that human beings act in predictable and rational ways.
First the bad news – the notion that people make decisions and choices to maximize some notion of objective self-interest has been demolished. People are not rational – far from it.
Now the good news – we are finding out exactly how and why we act in these seemingly irrational ways. In other words, there is a method to our seeming madness.
My view of the brain is heavily influenced by evolutionary biology and psychology. I do not believe that we have arrived at a perfect brain design, or that humankind deserves an exalted and special place in the universe. Rather, we are a band of super-cooperative apes that have come to dominate the planet, and in the process wiped out whole ecosystems in our locust-like voracious destructiveness. We are by far the most dominant force shaping the very destiny of life on the planet.
We evolved very slowly for a particular environment, but our rapid social and cultural advances and mushrooming populations have created a bewildering new world in which our old brains need to function. On the timescale of this dizzying change, evolution has effectively stopped, and we must rely on what has gotten us this far. By retracing the path that our distant ancestors took to get here, we can understand the many stunning abilities and glaring weaknesses that we have inherited.
Sometimes our reactions and responses are appropriate and uncannily helpful. In the blink of an eyes we can assess complex situations, and reach critical life-or-death decisions. At other times, we are seemingly our own worst enemies – repeating the same mistakes even when we know that the results will be massively counterproductive, or even deadly.
Unlocking the true nature of the brain is the last frontier. Recent work in fields such as biology, neuroscience, evolutionary psychology, medical imaging, and behavioral economics are combining to show us the inner workings of this evolutionary marvel.
This book is designed for you – the busy marketing professional. I want to give you the essentials, and draw you a map of this unexpected and wondrous terrain inside of the human mind. You will forever be altered by this journey that we are about to undertake together. It will seem like alien landscapes at first.
